Actress Brittany Panzer Talks Acting, Projects, And Being A Theater Geek
Because she knew that television and film were what she wanted to do long-term, she moved to Los Angeles a couple years ago to pursue her passion full time.
Brittany recently appeared on Foxās Lucifer and can next be seen in Liberty Crossing and the MGM film Valley Girl (2018). Additional acting credits include American Horror Story, Letās Just Be Friends (2017) and Fade Away (2016).
We had an opportunity to chat with Brittany about her latest projects. Check out the interview below.
Q: Thank you for granting the interview, Brittany! You were discovered at a mall and that started your modeling career. Tell us about how you got discovered.
Of course! It was funny actually. I was with my mom at the Aventura mall when a scout came up to me and asked if I was repped by anybody. Iāve always been into acting but had never thought about modeling. I took her card and my mom drove me the following week to meet with them and the rest is history! I ended up signing with them and thatās where the modeling began!
Q: You have always been a theater geek and were active in several school plays. Tell us which play and role was your favorite.
To say Iām a theater geek is an understatement⦠I think I listen to Les Mis at least twice a week! And I mean the entire soundtrack⦠not just a song or two. When I was a senior, I had the privilege of being cast as Kala, the adoptive mom in Tarzan. I got to perform Youāll be In My Arms at the BB&T Center which was definitely a highlight. My parents were so proud!
Q: You have appeared on some of the hottest shows on television. Was it a challenge to break into acting?
It was definitely a challenge to break in. I didnāt get into acting by being discovered or anything like that, I had to work my way up from the bottom. I moved out here from South Florida not knowing anything about TV/Film acting or anyone. I had to learn the business, sharpen my acting abilities, and get rep from an agent and manager. It wasnāt easy⦠not knowing anyone or anything. But I worked hard and did what I needed to do and couldnāt be happier with my team and where I am now. It sounds clichĆ©d but hard work and dedication really do pay off!
Q: Youāre a champion for several causes, such as PETA, the Polaris Project, and Black Lives Matter. You believe in equality for everyone. Why are these causes important to you?
I consider myself a very moral person. I genuinely canāt sleep at night if I donāt think that Iām a good person, and if I wouldnāt want something to happen to me, I have to fight for it to not happen to others. I became vegetarian and started supporting PETA when I was 13 after realizing what was going on. As far as the Polaris Project, we learned about human trafficking when I was in 9th grade ā we had an assembly on it. I was pretty ignorant about it before then, but now that Iām aware, itās not something I can just ignore. Black Lives Matter has gained popularity and momentum in the recent years and itās something I latched onto immediately because thereās still such an issue with racism in todayās society and it truly needs to be addressed and discussed. Just because black people arenāt in the fields picking cotton anymore, doesnāt mean that they arenāt still targeted today, and that needs to stop. And if Iām able to be a part of the movement that will put an end to that, you can bet Iāll join.
Q: Whatās next for you?
Well, I will be shooting a role on Dear White People as well as a couple films coming up. I also graduate college this Fall, finally!!! Iām certainly excited to finish that, as well as to start this new chapter of acting in my life.
Q: Is there anything you would like to add that we havenāt asked?
Yes! I will be appearing as a guest star in the upcoming TV show Liberty Crossing as well as in the MGM feature film Valley Girl. They wonāt be out until 2018, so thereās a little time but, when they come out, you better be there or be square. ?
ASU Online casts working actress in new role as film studies graduate
As a working Hollywood actress and model, hectic shooting schedules are Arizona State University student Brittany Panzerās reality. Her most recent role was on an episode of āLucifer,ā a Fox television series.
āShooting āLuciferā was really fun,ā said Panzer. āAnd it was my first hot and heavy make-out scene!ā
All those, uh, distractions would keep some students from making progress toward a degree ā but not Panzer.
āIt was pretty hard to manage school with [the āLuciferā shooting schedule], but I was proactive and actually emailed my teachers in advance to ask if I could submit some stuff early and/or get any extension on other projects and they were really accommodating,” she said. “I think being proactive about upcoming situations is best.ā
The Miami native relished the flexibility afforded her through ASUās online platform. Panzer didnāt expect to learn much from the required discussion posts, which she dutifully completed around acting engagements and auditions. She certainly did not expect to enjoy them. Yet, she did.
They āhelped me think of other mind-sets and other perspectives,ā she said.
Panzer graduates from ASU with her bachelorās degree in film and media studies this December, and with a more nuanced view of her chosen industry. She answered some questions about her career plans and future projects.
Question: What was your āahaā moment, when you realized you wanted to study in your field?
Answer: Iāve always wanted to major in either theater or film and media. Iām an actress, and both majors pertain to what I do. I think really learning about the world Iām in through film and media studies is invaluable. I can take acting classes anywhere, but itās wonderful to be able to learn about screen acting, writing and everything TV and film.
Q: Whatās something you learned while at ASU ā in the classroom or otherwise ā that surprised you, that changed your perspective?
A: Believe it or not, discussion boards helped change my perspective as to how people think. They made me realize that answers ā that I thought were obvious ā werenāt obvious to others and vice versa.
Q: Why did you choose ASU?
A: I needed to do school 100 percent online because of acting and modeling, and ASU is a great school with a wide range of degrees that can be completed online. So happy about my decision!
Q: Whatās the best piece of advice youād give to those still in school?
A: Do NOT wait until last minute to do your homework. Something will come up ā itās Murphyās law. Time management, my friends.
Q: What are your plans after graduation?
A: Acting! I just shot an episode of āDear White People,ā which comes out next year, and Iām gearing up for pilot season!
Q: If someone gave you $40 million to solve one problem on our planet, what would you tackle?
A: Iād tackle the homeless problem first in [Los Angeles] and then in other areas. I live in L.A. now, and itās shocking to actually see the homeless problem on a daily basis. Itās really heartbreaking, and I donāt think we as a whole are doing enough to help.
