I was a huge fan of the original Dynasty so I was naturally elated when I heard CW was reviving one of the most popular 80’s TV-shows. In addition to luring back original series fans for a nostalgia trip, I’d also anticipated an upgrade from the old series soapish and other dated elements to attract the current short attention span generation. I really wanted the remake or reboot or whatever to do well. Alas, the new Dynasty is a dud. A poorly written, clichéd-and-coincidence riddled shallow tripe with characters doing dumb shit. Frankly, I’m surprised how the initial project got the green light for a pilot and later, approved to a full series order. It must have been one helluva sales pitch or CW had some surplus and wanted to splurge a bit by producing a modestly budgeted show with global name recognition. If it worked, great. If it didn’t, that was okay too. A learning curve.
CW‘ Dynasty is in running (with Showtime’ White Famous close behind) for a place on my Worst New Shows of 2017 list. These two are the ones I can recall for now but the very top spot is reserved for a show that always in my mind in a soul-crushing way and unfortunately, the taint of it will remain with me for the rest of my life.
